History and Games

Games
The games that are on-line have been chosen or have been developed because of their usefulness in developing problem solving and analytical skills. To preview them, click "ARCADE" at left of screen.
Tetris    This is the chestnut, world renowned for its ability to develop geometric spatial skills. It never ceases to amaze me how difficult players find this game at first, and then how quickly they can reflect, rotate, and fit these shapes with practice.
Mastermind   An on-line version of the board game with a couple of useful options. Develops logical and deductive skills.
3-5-7 Matches   A game I use in class to teach the "working backwards" strategy.
Solitaire   Another on-line version of a board game. Develops logical and deductive skills and iterative patterns.
MathgymInvaders   A version of the "shoot-em-up" game that reinforces basic number facts including operations on integers.
Connect 4   A version of the 4-in-a-row boardgame the develops logical and strategic skills.
Towers of Hanoi   The classic game of iterative patterns.
Tic-tac-toe in 3 D   Says it all really.
Tic-tac-toe in 4 D!   Gotta try it to believe it!
  Battleships  Co-ordinate geometry drill

History

Throughout my career I have tried to give my students a sense of the relationship between social, cultural and historical influences and Mathematics. This collection of essays starting with the Pythagoreans attempts to highlight some of these relationships. Accompanying the essays are classroom Activities (some with interactive java applets) which can be freely reproduced as blackline masters. To view these essays and Activities, click "HISTORY" at left of screen.
